2014 was the first year Cata Odata ran its artist in residency program that featured 2 young emerging artists, from East Java and Canada, who are active in the genre of new media art. Armed with curiosity and dedication, together we were trying to create a vessel that functioned as a learning place, as well as to broaden the dialog between art and its audiences. After a series of events that included workshops, performances, and also a Q&A session, Cata Odata and the artists sat down together to evaluate the journey that had been shared for several weeks. From that discussion the first draft of BARE JOURNAL was born, a residency program that we trust will become Cata Odata’s annual program involving talented emerging artists. ‘Bare Journal’ directly accesses the behind-the-scene world of the artist’s creative journey, a part that rarely is exposed to the public. For 1 month artists, who are also accompanied by an art writer, are required to record their daily progress through their writings or imagery into a diary. A book that is usually private will be open to the public during the 30 day period of exhibition where everyone is allowed not only to read it, but also to write their impressions, messages, or criticism. Through this we aim to increase the recognition of artists as the creators, and the public as their audience and to inspire deeper levels of connectivity.Hereby we present our second artists residency program, titled BARE JOURNAL : LIAR featuring 2 self-taught artists from Surabaya and Kuala Lumpur, Imam Sucahyo and Rat Heist, as well as one art writer from Surabaya, Mohamad Arifin. This event would not be complete without the presence and participation from all of you, the audience, to leave your mark on the journals, that is meaningful for us, while helping us to move more steadily in the future. Hopefully, by the end of this journey, both artists and audiences will gain new insights, and ideas, as well as giving more recognition to the world of art that we celebrate together.
